Saturday 26th August
Every year, in August, Apulian families get together for a long-standing and laborious tradition: the making of “salsa”, the simple yet essential sauce made with the red tomatoes of Puglia and used throughout the year. It’s a day of hard work and a joyful time that everybody, adults and children alike, spends with happiness and fun.
Saturday 26th August, Borgo Egnazia’s main Piazza will host a festival celebrating the Apulian tomato and the ancient tradition of salsa. Our guests will have the opportunity to discover this precious local product and take part in its preparation, aided by farmers wearing the garments of our rural tradition and showing the steps of sauce-making: from choosing and cleaning to washing to boiling the tomatoes, and then grinding and bottling them. All of this will be accompanied by the rhythms of popular music.
Once again, the setting will be highly evocative: our beautiful Piazza will be decorated with thousands of red tomatoes, wicker baskets and tools from our rural tradition. Also, wandering across the alleys will be an ongoing discovery of Puglia, with some authentic craftsmen working their tools and street stalls displaying some delicacies off the Apulian cuisine.
